This policy explains how York Best Rated ("we", "us") collects and uses personal data, and your rights under the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
Who we are
York Best Rated is a curated local business directory operated by cottle.digital. For any privacy question, contact us at hello@yorkbestrated.uk.
What we collect
- Information you give us — when you recommend a business, register a business, or sign up to our newsletter (e.g. your name, email, and the details you submit). The recommend, register and newsletter forms are all hosted on this site; what you submit is passed to our forms/CRM provider, GoHighLevel.
- Newsletter sign-ups — we collect your email address and use it only to send you the newsletter. We use a confirmed (double) opt-in: you'll receive an email asking you to confirm before we ever send you anything, and you can unsubscribe from any email we send.
- Basic technical data — our host may process limited, aggregated server data (such as page requests) to keep the site running and secure. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking.
How we use it, and our lawful basis
- To review and publish business recommendations — our legitimate interest in running a curated directory.
- To send our newsletter — your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
- To respond to enquiries and keep the site secure — our legitimate interests.
Analytics
We use Clicky, a privacy-friendly website analytics service provided by Roxr Software Ltd, to understand how our site is used — for example, which pages are visited, how visitors find us, and how long they stay — so that we can improve it.
Clicky runs in its cookie-free mode on our site: it sets no cookies and stores no information on your device. It processes limited information about your visit, including the pages you view, the site or search that referred you, technical details such as your browser, device and operating system, your approximate location (country and region), and your IP address, which Clicky anonymises. We do not use this information to identify you personally, and we do not use it for advertising or cross-site tracking.
Our lawful basis for this processing is our legitimate interests in understanding and improving our website. As no cookies or other device storage are used, no cookie consent is required; however, you have the right to object to this processing — see "Your rights" below. Sharing and storage
We use trusted third-party providers to run the site and our forms — including our hosting provider (Netlify), our forms/CRM provider (GoHighLevel), Roxr Software Ltd (Clicky analytics), and Cloudflare, whose Turnstile check protects our forms from spam and processes your IP address to do so. They process data on our behalf under their own terms and safeguards. We do not sell your personal data.
How long we keep it
We keep personal data only as long as needed for the purpose it was collected, or as required by law, then delete it.
Your rights
You have the right to access, correct, or delete your data, to object to or restrict processing, and to data portability. To exercise any of these, email hello@yorkbestrated.uk. You can unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time via the link in any email.
You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
